THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The LDF government on Thursday launched four mega missions covering six crucial sectors including housing, environment, waste management, organic farming, education and health. Governor P. Sathasivam launched the four Missions at a state level function here which was followed by a day-long seminar on the present challenges in these sectors. The Life Mission will make sure of livelihood, inclusion and financial empowerment within five years. As part of the Mission, livelihood, education, health facilities, elderly care and social security will be provided to such families. Besides, housing complexes will be planned for families especially in urban areas because of scarcity of land.
One member of each family residing in such complexes will be given job-oriented training for employment, pre-primary upward education facilities, special coaching for weak students, English language learning, IT education, skill development and special counselling for youth. The government plans to provide health facilities, care for elderly, palliative care and social security to people residing in these complexes. Ardram Health Mission will turn government hospitals people-friendly. The high cost of medical treatment is making people paupers overnight. It is in this context that the public health system requires to be improved, it is felt.
Primary health centres will be converted to family health centres while medical colleges will be upgraded with more super speciality facilities. These facilities will be made affordable for poor patients as well. Comprehensive Education Modernisation Mission: Emphasis will be on reviving the public education system especially from classes 1 to eight. Schools which are 100 or 50 years old will be given a special revival package. Along with Malayalam, emphasis will be laid on English speaking. The government has already announced in the budget that 1000 government schools will be raised to the level of international schools.
Focus will also be on curriculum revival, assistance for differently abled students and improving infrastructure facilities. A full time CEO will be appointed for coordinating all activities. Haritha Kerala Mission will focus on waste management, conservation of water resources and organic farming. Focus will be on waste disposal at source, modernisation of water sources, creation of new water use culture, reviving existing ponds and streams. In the second phase, rivers and lakes will be taken up. Increasing the area of organic farming by using large tracts of barren land, terraces, biogas system, proper disposal of e-waste, hospital waste, modern-scientific centralised plants for cities is also planned.
